After a silver in Tokyo, Simone Biles and the high-powered U.S. women’s gymnastics team are golden once again.
The 27-year-old superstar led the Americans to an Olympic gold medal in the women’s artistic gymnastics team final on Tuesday, the fifth Olympic gold that Biles has won in her storied career.
Biles and her teammates Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera finished with a final score of 171.296, over five points clear of second-place Italy.
With the silver medal, Italy won its first artistic gymnastics medal in 96 years. Brazil earned the bronze with a score of 165.497, just 0.234 points ahead of fourth-place Great Britain.
Canada finished the event fifth, and while it wasn’t a medal, it was tied for the highest-ever finish for the Canadians in the women’s team event. Canada also finished fifth in 2012 at the London Olympics.
Led by veteran Halifax’s Ellie Black, Canada finished with a combined score of 162.432, just over two points off the podium.
Ava Stewart of Bowmanville, Ont., Cassie Lee of Toronto, Aurelie Tran from Repentigny, Que., and Vancouver’s Shallon Olsen were the other four members who contributed to Canada’s fifth-place finish.
