With training camps opening up across the NFL this week, many teams and fans are optimistic about the new season and convincing themselves that something close to a best-case scenario can play itself out.

However, one team that has been considered a perennial contender doesn’t seem to be in that space, mentally, emotionally or literally.

The Dallas Cowboys are still hurting after being dumped in the wild-card round of the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers, and arguably their three biggest stars — pass rusher Micah Parsons, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott — are all looking for contract extensions.

It led Adam Schein to say the Cowboys are a “mess” and that they lead the NFL in “nonsense” and “stuff.”

Whenever things don’t go well for the Cowboys, they never happen quietly, and right now, there is lots of buzz about the immediate future of the franchise.

It is looking more and more like Prescott will have to play out the final year of his contract and become a free agent next offseason.

Prescott was a prime MVP candidate in 2023, but he yet again underperformed in the playoffs, and that could be a reason he hasn’t gotten his bag yet.

The Cowboys have had one of the most talented rosters in football for a while, but now they have some real holes, especially at running back, and they may not have a true No. 2 wideout behind Lamb.

Schein feels they’re such a mess that he isn’t confident they will even make the playoffs this coming season.
