One of the best players over the past two decades in men’s tennis will step away after the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Great Britain’s Andy Murray announced on X on Tuesday that the Olympic tournament will signify the end of his career.
In his tweet, he said the most memorable weeks of his career have been those where he has competed for Great Britain. Murray is the lone player to win two Olympic singles titles, doing so back to back in 2012 and ’16.
This will mark the fifth Olympic appearance for Murray, who dropped out of the singles tournament earlier this month at Wimbledon because of a back injury.
Murray’s career looked like it might be coming to an end when he had two hip surgeries in 2018 and ’19, but he managed to keep going for five more years.
Murray won three Grand Slam titles — Wimbledon in 2013 and ’16 and the U.S. Open in 2012.
While Murray has announced his decision, fans will start to wonder about Rafael Nadal’s future after the Olympics.
The 38-year-old Nadal hasn’t ruled out returning to the pro circuit in 2025.
