The first day of the Republican convention — which featured the unveiling of Sen. J.D. Vance as Donald Trump’s running mate — was a doubling down on populist politics that could make Trump stronger in the “blue wall” states Joe Biden needs to win re-election.

But it also leaves a pretty big opening for Democrats:
