The Golden State Warriors will look vastly different during the 2024-25 NBA season as they’ll be without Klay Thompson who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks.
Thompson’s relationship with the organization eroded after failed contract extension negotiations, and now the two sides will be without each other for the first time in over a decade.
However, general manager Mike Dunleavy and the front office did well to pivot in the wake of the Thompson trade as they acquired Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton to round out the bench and their rotation.
While those three veterans are expected to have a role, the Warriors will also be hoping to see more out of Jonathan Kuminga who showed real flashes once head coach Steve Kerr placed him in the starting lineup.
Kuminga is the most athletic and physically gifted player on the roster and is in line for a larger role on both ends of the floor.
During the Las Vegas Summer League, Dunleavy shared that he and the organization are looking forward to seeing if Kuminga can take a leap via NBC Sports.
“Usually that Year 3 or Year 4 leap is a huge one, and that’s what we’re hoping out of Jonathan this year,” Dunleavy told ESPN’s Mark Jones and Doris Burk during Saturday’s game.
Normally young players take a few years to develop and reach their potential, and it sounds like Dunleavy is high on Kuminga’s potential.
Golden State has resisted the urge to trade Kuminga for another star and it remains to be seen if that gamble will pay off.
