Plant-based foods supplier This has become the third company to announce a product recall against the backdrop of an E. coli outbreak in the UK.

On Sunday (16 June), the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) revealed This had “taken the precautionary step” of recalling its This Isn’t Chicken and Bacon wrap sold by the retailer WH Smith because of possible contamination with the bacteria.

The wraps implicated have product use-by dates up to 18 June.

This follows Greencore and Samworth Brother in recalling sandwiches and other food-to-go products after an E. coli STEC O145 outbreak that has left 67 people in hospital and more than 200 ill in total.

The FSA said This had not detected E. coli in the product but had said it was being recalled “as a precaution in case products contain any ingredients contaminated with E. coli”.

E. coli symptoms include severe diarrhoea, abdominal pain and, more rarely, haemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS), a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and can even be fatal.

On Friday (14 June), private-label food-to-go heavyweights Greencore and Samworth Brothers issued recalls covering dozens of sandwich, wrap and salad SKUs sold under the private labels of the UK’s largest grocers, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons.

The FSA is still trying to track down the cause of the E. coli outbreak with the latest reports suggesting lettuce or salad leaf used in the sandwich and sandwich-type products could be the culprit.

When contacted by Just Food, This said it would not be commenting further beyond the details shared on the FSA website.

This was founded in 2017 by Andy Shovel and Pete Sharman after they had sold the previous business, burger chain Chosen Bun.

The company, which has used crowdfunding to raise money to invest in its manufacturing, has won listings with major UK retailers.
