Trader Joe’s loyalists in Seattle’s Greenwood neighborhood may soon be able to count on a shorter trip to their favorite store.
The grocer appears to be working on a new location at the base of a Greenwood apartment building at Greenwood Avenue North and North 87th Street, according to permit documents filed with the city in May and June.
For now, the details are sparse. It’s unclear when the new store may open and Trader Joe’s did not immediately return requests for comment.
Electrical and construction permit filings indicate lighting work and other improvements could begin soon. The project’s total cost is estimated at $1.75 million, according to the documents first reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal.
A Trader Joe’s opening would mark a grocery revival at the intersection. The eight-story Hemlock Apartments building set to house the new store sits on the site of a shuttered Safeway. Developers finished that building in 2022. A Fred Meyer is a few blocks away.
Along with about 300 apartments, the development includes 12,000 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, according to property records.
Greenwood would be the company’s sixth location in Seattle, and the third north of the ship canal. In 2021, Trader Joe’s also indicated plans for a new location at the base of an apartment tower underway in South Lake Union, but that project has faced significant delays.
