The Pittsburgh Steelers are in a bit of a unique situation right now.
They have two quarterbacks looking to prove the doubters wrong, and both arrived pretty much at the same time and with a new offensive coordinator, so they’re both starting from scratch.
Nonetheless, given their situations, Russell Wilson is still expected to have a slight edge in the QB1 race, mostly because of some of the promises that were made before.
According to a report by Diana Russini of The Athletic, there is a clear favorite to get the starting quarterback job.
“For now, Wilson and Fields will battle for the starting gig, but to find out who has the inside track so far, just look at where the reps at practice are allocated. That, combined with some conversations with sources in Pittsburgh, indicates Wilson is getting a majority of the work,” Russini wrote.
All signs point at Wilson getting the bulk of the work and the reps, at least early in the season.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that Fields won’t have more than enough opportunities to take the job
Not only is he younger, but one could argue that he’s also a better and more natural fit for Arthur Smith’s offense.
Also, if Wilson struggles or doesn’t show a lot early on, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the fans and the media push for Mike Tomlin to give Fields a chance to at least show what he’s made of.
Fields makes the most sense from a long-term perspective, but it’s evident that the Steelers believe Wilson gives them a better chance to go for the big prize right now.
Whatever the case, that seems like a good problem to have if you’re the Steelers, especially after having one of the worst QB rooms in the entire league.
