Blue Jays place Romano on 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed closer Jordan Romano on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation, the team announced Saturday.

Romano’s placement on the injured list is retroactive to May 30.

In a corresponding move, the Blue Jays recalled pitcher Brendon Little from triple-A Buffalo. He will be active for Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Romano underwent an MRI on Friday that revealed no structural damage, manager John Schneider said Saturday. The right hander will not throw for the next couple days and he and the team will go from there.

Yimi Garcia will likely be the first closing option with Romano sidelined, and Chad Green may get some chances as well, Schneider added.

In 15 appearances this season, Romano has posted a 6.59 ERA, eight saves and one blown save, 13 strikeouts and a 1-2 record.

The news comes just a day after Toronto placed starting pitcher Alek Manoah on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow sprain.

Little has posted a 4.15 ERA with 25 strikeouts and an 0-2 record in 16 games and 17.1 innings pitched with the Bisons this season. He has three appearances at the major-league level in 2024, registering a 10.8 ERA in 3.1 innings pitched.

Watch the Blue Jays take on the Pirates Saturday on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+, starting at 3 p.m. ET / noon PT.
