The New York Giants almost lost one of their top assistants, so they wanted to make him a bit of a peace offering.
OC Mike Kafka interviewed for the Seattle Seahawks’ head coaching vacancy.
The Giants prevented him from getting a second interview and promoted him to assistant head coach.
There had been plenty of speculation about his future with the organization, as HC Brian Daboll had taken offensive play-calling duties from him.
The title change made it seem like Kafka would also be calling the plays for the Giants in 2024, but that might not be the case.
Brian Daboll has been calling plays during OTAs, and he recently admitted that they wouldn’t decide on an offensive play-caller until after training camp (via Giants Videos).
“I’ve called plays for a long time. It’s good to get out here at practice and do it.”

Of course, Daboll is a former offensive coordinator himself, so that comes naturally to him, and he’s more than familiar with the play-calling process and duties.
Still, it’s interesting to see that he decided to retain Kafka, yet he didn’t commit to allowing him to call the plays.
The Giants have a subpar offense, but it’s not like they have the personnel to be much better, either.
Of course, they have a potential generational talent at wide receiver in Malik Nabers, but their quarterback situation is far from ideal with Daniel Jones, and losing Saquon Barkley was also a big blow.
For now, it seems like not even they know what’s best to solve their offensive woes.
