After yet another collapse early in the NFL playoffs, there is a cloud of uncertainty and even concern hanging over the Dallas Cowboys these days.

They were strangely passive in free agency, which some attribute to their attempt to gain enough salary cap flexibility to hand out lucrative contract extensions to star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and Pro Bowl linebacker Micah Parsons.

Quarterback Dak Prescott is also in line for an extension, as he’s heading into the final year of his current contract, and it may not be a guarantee that Dallas will come to terms with him on an extension.

But James Jones said on FS1’s “Speak” that if both sides do come to terms on one, Prescott should get paid a little less than he’s eligible to receive.

Jared Goff, who just took the Detroit Lions to the NFC Championship Game and got them a 24-7 lead at halftime over the San Francisco 49ers, just got a four-year extension that is reportedly worth $212 million.

Jones said Prescott deserves to receive “Kirk Cousins money” because Prescott, unlike Goff, hasn’t proven he can take his team very far in the playoffs.

Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler, signed a four-year, $180 million deal to join the Atlanta Falcons this offseason.

Prescott has been a very good quarterback during the regular season, and for a minute late last fall, he was a leading MVP candidate, but he has a history of greatly underperforming in big games.

In the Wild Card round of the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers in January, he got sacked four times and threw two early interceptions, putting his team behind 27-0 just before halftime.

Prescott threw two of his three touchdown passes in garbage time as Dallas lost, 48-32.

Dallas is a very proud franchise with a fan base that expects nothing short of greatness, and perhaps Prescott simply isn’t worthy of being the face of that franchise past this coming season.
