The Minnesota Vikings have two new quarterbacks.
Neither of them was there last season, so, technically, they’re both starting from scratch.
Nonetheless, Sam Darnold was signed early in the offseason and is an NFL veteran, so he should have a significant edge over J.J. McCarthy, at least for now.
According to a report by The Purple Persuasion, most insiders believe Darnold is going to be the team’s starter come Week 1.
However, he also pointed out the fact that those insiders were wrong about the Vikings’ alleged desire to trade up to get Drake Maye, even though McCarthy was reportedly their guy all along.
Most of the #Vikings beat writers don’t think J.J. McCarthy has a chance at starting week 1. Don’t take everything they say as “gospel” 🤫
A perfect example is Drake Maye. Nearly all of then predicted the Vikings to draft Maye. Look how that turned out… 👀

As of now, Darnold is also the odds-on favorite to be the Week 1 starter.
Then again, McCarthy’s odds of +120 imply that he’s not that far behind in the race.
At the end of the day, money also plays a big role in a team’s decision-making, and the Vikings won’t just give Darnold $10 million to watch him sit on the bench.
Also, it’s not like they’re in a big hurry to get McCarthy on the field, as they’re still behind the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Detroit Lions in the race for the NFC North Division, so they can afford to be patient with their prized rookie.
McCarthy has drawn mixed reviews throughout the course of his collegiate career and the pre-draft process, and it seems like the fans will have to wait for a little longer before watching him take the field in the Twin Cities.
