Anthony Edwards: The NBA’s Newest Rising Star!
While the most anticipated chapter of the NBA season is in full swing, one name has stood out from the rest of the crowd in leading the Minnesota Timberwolves’ postseason surge. Scoring a playoff career-high 43 points in the second round against reigning champions Denver Nuggets, Anthony Edwards has solidified his name in the limelight as he aims for both his and the franchise’s first-ever NBA Championship.
Despite only being in the initial stages of the playoffs, Edwards has already rectified the history books. He became the 4th player in Timberwolves history to score 200+ points in a single postseason, alongside the likes of Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett. Whilst we saw the quick departures of Lebron James and Kevin Durant in the first round, Anthony Edwards is here to stay and the new kid in town is planning to take over the block.
To say this continuous level of performance is a surprise would be harsh. NBA fans have become used to his usual highlight play and leading the scoring in yet another regular season win. The nickname ‘Ant-Man’ from his father quickly resembled his athletic ability, making what seemed the impossible shot very much possible.
The shooting guard is averaging his highest points per game and field goal percentage since entering the league in 2020 and has been at the forefront of his team’s best record since the 2003/04 season, where they met a formidable Los Angeles Lakers outlet including the likes of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal in the Western Conference Finals. Just a simple search on social media shows a host of posts comparing and calling the 22-year-old to Michael Jordan.
This season, the Timberwolves are still searching for the answer to whether they can genuinely expect a Championship. The Boston Celtics are deemed the heavy favourites for the title and look strong as ever as they hold a 2-1 lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers, whilst the Nuggets cannot be ruled out especially if reigning MVP Nikola Jokic has anything to say on proceedings.
What we do know is that Ant-Man is a special player, and it seems the sky is the limit for what he can accomplish in his basketball career. If these Jordan comparisons are true, there is no doubt that many will know the name in years to come.
