In his sixth season with McLaren and Formula 1, Lando Norris wins his first-ever race at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. Lando Norris a potential Formula 1 World Champion now has scored his first maiden win in Miami. Finishing ahead of the championship leader Max Verstappen by over seven seconds.
After a poor Sprint Race on Saturday morning, it had not gone in Lanod’s favour. Colliding with the seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton, the now-inaugurated Grand Prix winner Lando Norris had his work cut out going into Saturday’s qualifying. Starting fifth on the grid.
As most eyes were on the anticipation that it would be Red Bull verses Ferrari.
However, McLaren and Norris sought out to prove everyone wrong, and that is exactly what they did.
Miami Grand Prix
During the first half of the grand prix, Lando did not resort to the same aggression as everyone in front of him but instead protected his medium tyres. In the tactic to pit after everyone in front of him pitted.
Leading the race after, Verstappen, Leclerc, Piastri, Sainz and Perez pitted. Lando stayed out happy with his tyre life and continued.
But then, Yellow Flag in Sector 1 came, and Logan Sargeant and Kevin Magnussen collided bringing out the Safety Car. However, Lando had missed the opportunity to pit and had to do another lap under the safety car conditions.
And to Lando’s benefit, Bert Mylander, the Safety Car driver, accidentally picked up Max Verstappen. Giving Norris a 30-second gap to pit without any consequence.
Lando came into the pits, put on a fresh set of Hard tyres, and rejoined as the race leader. Now the question was, could Lando Norris repel the raging bull of Verstappen, or could the papaya arrow shoot off into the distance?
The restart was underway, and Verstappen did not phase Lando, as he increased his lead by a few tenths every lap and never faltered.
With no communication from Lando, nor his pit board you could feel as the last few laps unfolded that this could be the day Lando achieves his first win. And…it did!
Lando Norris crossed the line to win the Miami Grand Prix and his first EVER grand prix victory. He dedicated a win to his mother and father over the team radio and to his grandmother.
And a win that will add to his tally, as Max Verstappen said, “This will not be your only one!”
