Now that Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season is in the books, the San Antonio Spurs need to start building a legitimate team around him.

He has definitely met the massive hype surrounding him, but this season, he had a very weak team surrounding him, and the Spurs cannot simply take their time.

Atlanta Hawks star guard Trae Young has been rumored to be on the trade block, and while some have linked him to San Antonio, they reportedly don’t see him as a good fit with Wembanyama, per NBACentral via Kurt Helin.

While Young averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists a game this year, he is a vastly flawed player who wouldn’t seem to fit the Spurs’ mold.

He shot just 43.0 percent from the field and has questionable shot selection, and he also committed 4.4 turnovers per game.

Young is also a weak defender, at least partly because he is listed at 6-foot-1 and 164 pounds.

With over $43 million due to him next season, he would also be very expensive for a Spurs team that doesn’t have that many players who are attractive trade pieces.

After going 22-60 this season, San Antonio will have a rather high draft pick this June, and it’s just a question of how high that pick will be after May’s draft lottery.

This year’s NBA Draft class is regarded as weak, so perhaps they would be best off packaging that pick for a legitimate young star guard who is also a floor general.

But Young likely won’t fit that bill because of his many weaknesses.
