Canada defeated the United States 6-5 in overtime on Sunday to win gold at the IIHF Women’s World Championship.
Danielle Serdachny scored the game-winner in the extra frame to win it for the Canadians.
Canada’s Erin Ambrose got the scoring started with a goal from the point 6:32 into the opening frame.
The Unites States answered quickly with a tally from Laila Edwards 1:40 later.
Early in the second period, Canada re-took the lead courtesy of Julia Gosling, who scored on the rush.
But much like the nature of the rivalry, this game went back and forth, with the United States’ Megan Keller burying a wrist shot to tie the game once again midway through the second frame.
Then, after an Alex Carpenter goal to give the United States its first lead, Canada captain Marie-Philip Poulin ripped a shot bar-down to knot it up at 3-3.
In the third, each side scored in the first 11 minutes, setting the table for a last-minute finish.
Poulin then scored a go-ahead goal with just over seven minutes remaining, her second tally of the night, but naturally, Caroline Harvey tied the game shortly after.
The last four gold medal games have featured both Canada and the United States with the latter winning the last matchup in 2023 and the former winning the previous two in 2021 and 2022.
The win marks the 13th time Canada has brought home the gold at the international tournament.
