The New York Islanders picked up a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens in overtime on Thursday, but it might have come at the cost of defenceman Noah Dobson.
After the victory, Islanders head coach Patrick Roy said Dobson suffered an upper-body injury and that the team would have more information tomorrow.
It’s unclear when Dobson got hurt or how it happened but it was early on in the first period as the 24-year-old left the game and did not return after just 1:28 of time on the ice.
Unfortunate timing for New York and Dobson as he’d really picked up his play as of late. Dobson racked up five points in his previous three games, entering the game against Montreal. On Apr. 9, Dobson collected his 60th assist of the season, becoming just the second defenceman in Islanders history to reach the milestone.
Dobson is in the midst of a career year, scoring 10 goals and notching career-high marks in assists with 60 and points with 70.
The Islanders sit third in the Metropolitan division with a 37-27-15 record, good for 89 points. They’ve yet to fully clinch a playoff spot but are three points ahead of the second wild card Pittsburgh Penguins with three games left in the season.
Currently on a six-game win streak, the Islanders’ next test comes against the cross-city rival New York Rangers on Saturday, April 13. They’ll then take on the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins, in what could be a decisive game, to close out the season.
