It has been thought that there are three top-notch quarterback prospects in this year’s NFL draft: Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, in no particular order.

Recently, the profile of J.J. McCarthy has been rising, and he could make that terrific trio into a fearsome foursome.

But Michael Penix Jr. is another intriguing QB prospect, and former NFL signal-caller Robert Griffin III took to Twitter to praise Penix for his speed and style of play.

“Michael Penix Jr. is a 4.4 guy and if you are shocked by that, you haven’t watched enough of his tape. His speed showed up at Indiana and Washington despite his limited rushing stats. He is a THROW FIRST DISTRIBUTOR OF THE BALL who makes sure his guys EAT,” Griffin said.

Penix played a total of five seasons in the NCAA, and he spent the last two years at the University of Washington.

In 2023, he threw for 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns while leading Washington to the College Football Playoff National Championship game, where they lost to McCarthy and the University of Michigan.

He finished second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, and he looked impressive on Thursday when Washington held it’s Pro Day.

Many mock drafts have Penix going in the second round of this year’s NFL draft, but maybe he will go a bit higher due to what teams saw from him on Thursday.

This year’s draft crop could end up yielding the best group of quarterbacks in quite some time — perhaps the last such crop came in 2020 when Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert all went in the top six, while Jordan Love was taken later in the first round.
