The days of the Detroit Lions being an NFL laughingstock are over, as they’re coming off a season in which they finished with a 12-5 record and made it all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

Many feel they can duplicate that success in 2024, especially since their core remains intact.

On Wednesday, the Lions kept another member of their 2023 roster when they re-signed backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld, per Adam Schefter.

Jared Goff is still the man in Detroit, especially after he had another productive season with 4,575 passing yards, 30 passing touchdowns and a 67.3 percent pass completion rate, but injuries happen, and it is important for NFL teams to have at least one competent backup.

Teddy Bridgewater, last season’s backup for the Lions, recently announced his retirement, which meant that keeping Sudfeld was a high priority.

Sudfeld, a northern California native, was a sixth-round draft pick in 2016 out of Indiana University, and while he has been with four different teams since then, he has played for just two of them.

He saw a bit of playing time for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2017 to 2020, and he was a member of their Super Bowl-winning squad during the 2018 campaign.

In 2021, the San Francisco 49ers brought Sudfeld in for insurance, and he moved on to the Lions for the 2022 season.

In six career games in the NFL, he has thrown for 188 yards and one touchdown while completing 67.6 percent of his pass attempts.

The Lions won the NFC North rather easily in 2023, but the division will be a lot more competitive next season, and all four teams there could make a serious run at the playoffs.
