The San Francisco 49ers stumbled upon their new franchise quarterback.
They traded up to get Trey Lance, who looked like the next big thing in college, albeit he was clearly a project.
Lance couldn’t get the nod over Jimmy Garoppolo, who also failed to retain his job because of injuries.
The Niners pretty much had to throw Brock Purdy into the fire.
Then, the former Mr. Irrelevant was relevant and more, holding onto the starting job and never looking back.
With this in mind, NFL scout Adam Peters was brutally honest about getting him in the NFL draft.
Now working for the Washington Commanders, Peters admitted that Purdy even surprised him, and they would’ve taken him sooner if they knew he was going to turn out to be that good (via JP Finlay).
“If we knew he was that good we probably would have taken him sooner…Now I’ve got to find a new quarterback,” Peters said.

Talking at the NFL Scouting Combine, Peters added that he’s now in charge of doing it all over again, as he has to choose another quarterback for his new organization.
That pretty much tells you everything you need to know about their plans with Sam Howell, who may have played himself off of the field in his first full season as a starter.
The Commanders will have the No. 2 selection in the upcoming NFL Draft, so Peters has a bit of a tough decision to make between Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye, as Caleb Williams is almost a lock to go first overall.
If that pick fails, however, perhaps he can find another gem in the later rounds of the draft again.
