Dan Quinn is the new head coach of the Washington Commanders, and instead of retaining Eric Bieniemy as his offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury was hired for that role.
Kingsbury had previously served four seasons as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, and during that time, he got to coach quarterback Kyler Murray, who made two Pro Bowls in 2020 and 2021.
Kingsbury said, per Nicki Jhabvala, that the key to successful offenses in football is adapting to one’s personnel and getting players to do what they excel at, while not asking them to do what they can’t.
Kliff Kingsbury on successful offenses: “Being able to adapt to your personnel, do what you do best and not ask them to do what they can’t. … You got to be able to run the football in four-minute and throw it in two-minute.”

Currently, the Commanders’ starting quarterback is Sam Howell, who threw an NFL-high 21 interceptions this season and was sacked more times than any other signal-caller.
They will have the No. 2 pick in April’s draft, and one has to figure they will use it on a quarterback.
Washington most likely won’t get to take University of Southern California star Caleb Williams, but they should have the opportunity to take someone such as Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye.
However, Kingsbury spent this season as a senior offensive analyst at USC, which gave him the privilege of coaching Williams, and several years ago, he got to coach three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes when he was the head coach for Texas Tech University.
The Commanders have a solid wide receiver in Terry McLaurin, but they have plenty of work to do otherwise after going 4-13 and missing the playoffs for the third straight year.
However, they have new ownership in the form of billionaire investor Josh Harris, and it appears his group is willing to do whatever it takes to restore the franchise to the type of glory it regularly enjoyed in the 1980s and early 1990s.
