CALGARY – This is foreign territory for Dustin Wolf.
Not just playing in the NHL, but being lit up.
Neither happens very often for the 22-year-old who has been his league’s top goalie four years in succession.
Yet, there he was, searching for answers in front of the media after his dream-turned-nightmare start saw him torched for six goals by one of the NHL’s worst teams.
The team he grew up idolizing as a young man in Gilroy, California.

Not only did it bloat his NHL numbers to a 3.91 GAA and .878 save percentage in spot duty this year, but it ruined yet another opportunity for the undersized goalie to start proving he’s capable of finishing a journey that has had him proving naysayers wrong every step of the way.
Eventually, he’ll get that chance, but what has to sting even more is that it’s anyone’s guess when he’ll get another chance to atone.
Unless Jacob Markstrom is traded, it could be a while until Wolf is given his next NHL start, as Dan Vladar is close to returning from injury.
Then again, with rumours swirling that the Flames’ sell-off is about to intensify, Wolf could also be thrust into an everyday NHL role within days – a gig that may then include plenty of nights like these for a retooling organization.
“It’s a lesson, I guess, that he’s got to find a way,” said Flames coach Ryan Huska of the youngster’s evening.
“I know he’s good that way. I know he’ll flush it. There are certain things he’ll take from it and make sure he’s better his next start.”
How does he do that?
“Just do what he’s been doing,” said Huska.
“He needs to get back in there and be himself.”

“He’s a goalie that has overcome a lot of hurdles all the way along. A lot of people said he couldn’t play in the western league. He played there.
“Couldn’t play in the American league, he played there. So now he’s getting a chance to play in the NHL.”
And it hasn’t come as easily as his success at every other level has.
With the organization taking more of a long-term view as part of its youth movement, the belief is these are the nights that will ultimately serve him well.
Short-term there has to be frustration from a young man who keeps reminding himself it’s all part of the process.
“You always want to come out and play the very best you can,” he said after a game in which his teammates were drastically out-competed to drop from 20th to 23rd in the standings.
“The outcome was unfortunate, but I think these are games and days that you look back on. They suck, but at the same time it’s a great opportunity to evaluate yourself as a player and a person and come back stronger.”
After a quiet first period his team led 1-0, Wolf allowed three straight in the second period before the third turned into a bloodbath.
On the first goal, he caught an edge, on the third he didn’t seal his post as Chris Tanev tried to freeze it in his pads, on the fifth it went in off his glove and on the sixth he was beaten clean in alone.
