The San Francisco 49ers made a rather shocking decision.

They fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after just one season on the job.

Simply put, it seems like they’re blaming him for the Super Bowl loss, which doesn’t seem fair or accurate.

That’s why former NFL player Damien Woody put HC Kyle Shanahan on blast over this decision.

Talking on ESPN’s Get Up, he stated that it just seems like Shanahan ‘doesn’t get it,’ urging him to have some accountability for constantly falling short in big games.

“It just feels to me that Kyle Shanahan doesn’t get it. Where’s the accountability on his part as far as why he keeps falling short in these big moments?” Woody said.

Truth be told, Wilks should’ve been fired if the Niners had lost to the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game, so perhaps he was on thin ice during the Super Bowl.

Then again, the Niners’ defense was actually quite solid throughout the course of the big game, as well as for most of the season.

It wasn’t Wilks who decided to give up on the run despite being up on the scoreboard and having the reigning Offensive Player of the Year as his starting running back.

It wasn’t him who decided to get the ball in the first possession of overtime, either.

Wilks should land on his feet soon, but maybe it’s time people start having some uncomfortable conversations about Kyle Shanahan.
