The 2024 Super League season kicks off and for the first time every match will be shown live on Sky Sports.
A blockbuster cross-city derby between Hull FC and Hull KR gets the campaign under way on Thursday, February 15, with five further fixtures live on Sky Sports on Friday and Saturday.
The season concludes with the play-offs followed by the Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday, October 12, and we have a guide to everything you need to know – including how to watch every match…
What is the Super League season format?
The regular season will comprise 27 rounds, with the final slate of fixtures taking place in the third week of September.
That is followed by the play-offs, where the top six teams in the competition go through to knockout matches. The top two teams are seeded through to home semi-finals, while the other four teams go into an elimination round where third hosts sixth and fourth hosts fifth.
The two semi-final winners go through to the Grand Final, where the winners are crowned Super League champions. The team which finishes top of the table at the end of the regular season is also awarded the League Leaders’ Shield.
Who are the teams?
Wigan Warriors are the reigning Super League champions. Other teams from the North-West of England are Challenge Cup holders Leigh Leopards, Salford Red Devils, 10-time champions St Helens, and Warrington Wolves.
Eight-time champions Leeds Rhinos, plus Castleford Tigers, and Huddersfield Giants are among the Yorkshire contingent, along with Hull FC and Hull KR, who represent the west and the east sides of Kingston upon Hull respectively.
Last year’s Grand Final runners-up Catalans Dragons provide a French flavour to the competition, while London Broncos add a southern dimension after winning promotion from the Championship in 2023.
What are the important dates in the calendar?
The Super League regular season gets under way on Thursday, February 15 and concludes with a final round of matches in the third week of September.
The play-offs commence with the elimination matches on September 27 and 28, with the Grand Final on Saturday, October 12.
Other highlights in the calendar include Rivals Round over the Easter Weekend of March 28 to 31, which features the traditional Good Friday clash between St Helens and Wigan, and another Hull derby.
This year’s Magic Weekend is at the home of Leeds United, Elland Road, and sees all 12 Super League clubs play one round of fixtures at the same venue across the weekend of August 17 and 18.
The competition will take a break for the sixth round of the Challenge Cup, when Super League teams enter the tournament, on March 21 to 24. The quarter-finals are from April 11 to 14, followed by the semi-finals on the weekend of May 18-19 and the final on June 8 at Wembley Stadium.
There will be a mid-season international break on the weekend of June 29 to 30 as well.
How does relegation work in 2024?
Unlike previous seasons, there will be no automatic promotion and relegation between Super League and the Championship at the end of 2024.
The make-up of Super League will be decided on gradings from IMG, which take into account various factors, including attendance, catchment area, facilities, finances, as well as on-field performance.
Teams across all three professional divisions will be graded either A, B or C, with A-grade teams guaranteed of a place in Super League.
Every club received an illustrative grade following the 2023 season.
How can I watch Super League on Sky Sports?
For the first 15 rounds of the season, with the exception of Rivals Round, Sky Sports subscribers will have exclusive access to two matches per week.
The remaining four matches of each round will be shown live on Sky Sports and Super League’s own streaming platform.
As in previous years, Sky Sports will make exclusive selections from Round 16 and beyond as the season progresses, which will include a number of additional Thursday night fixtures.
In addition, Sky Sports will show selected matches from the Women’s Super League, including the play-off semi-finals and the Grand Final, plus the Wheelchair Super League Grand Final.

Who will appear on Sky Sports’ coverage?
Recently-retired former England captain Sam Tomkins joins the Sky Sports line-up in 2024, having brought the curtain down on his stellar playing career at the end of last season.
Four-time Grand Final winner and former Ireland international prop Kyle Amor is on board as well, as are former England Women’s international Courtney Winfield-Hill and England Women’s captain Jodie Cunningham. Commentators Dave Woods and Mark Wilson have joined the line-up too.
Brian Carney again fronts Sky Sports’ coverage, with familiar faces Jon Wilkin, Jon Wells, Barrie McDermott, Terry O’Connor and Jamie Jones-Buchanan all forming part of the panel of pundits.
Jenna Brooks will bring you all of the latest news and interviews pitchside, with her and Wilkin hosting our rugby league podcast The Bench every week throughout the season.
