Wall Street Journal: “For Republican lawmakers, Donald Trump is the biggest reason they are both eager to crack down on border crossings and leery of any deal. His yearslong advocacy for a hard-line immigration policy has become gospel for most GOP politicians, who today see any deal as likely diluting the potency of Trump’s message in the fall.”

“For Democrats, meanwhile, the reality of record crossings at the southern border has set in, particularly as more migrants head for blue cities and states to seek shelter, and as Democratic officials in New York, Chicago and elsewhere have implored the White House for help.”

“Polls show many Americans disapprove of the way President Biden has handled the issue, a potential drag on his re-election campaign. The growing crisis has led him to use increasingly harsh language on the issue over the protests of many liberals, culminating in urgent calls for Congress to reach a deal on largely Republican terms.”
