The New England Patriots will enter the 2024 NFL season with a much different coaching staff than fans are used to.
Having recent disappointing seasons, owner Robert Kraft decided to part ways with long-time head coach Bill Belichick.
The Patriots replaced Belichick with linebackers coach Jerod Mayo who is well-respected in the building.
Mayo is an interesting candidate because of his former experience as a player as well as his time helping coach defensive players.
Mayo and New England have been busy searching for candidates to fill their coordinator positions, including defensive coordinator.
Like Mayo, it appears they’ve settled on an in-house candidate to become their new defensive coordinator via Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.
“All signs point to the Patriots promoting DL coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, per sources. Should be official early next week, New England has called other candidates to tell them they’re out,” Breer said.

Covington was hired by the Patriots back in 2017 to be a coaching assistant before he was promoted to outside linebackers coach in 2019.
He spent one season in that role before being promoted to defensive line coach where he spent three years in the position.
It seems that New England places a high value on people who have been in their organization for some time and Covington checks all the boxes.
It remains to be seen how effective he’ll be in this new role, though the same thing can be said for Mayo who is a first-time head coach himself.
Regardless, the next era of Patriots football is here and fans are hoping it gets off to a great start next year.
