This house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been updated by the sellers, who installed new appliances, a new electrical system and new plumbing during renovations, and also uncovered original floorboards and an original kitchen fireplace, which is now the centerpiece of a lower-level den.

The property is about a half-hour drive from the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. Driving to Richmond or Fredericksburg takes just over an hour. Washington is two hours away.

Size: 7,586 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,318

Indoors: A long, gated driveway leads from the road up to the main house, where a paved path connects to the front entrance.

The front doors open into a foyer with high ceilings and original wood molding. To the right is a living room with a fireplace that has a simple white mantel and tall, deep-set windows overlooking the grounds. To the left is a dining room with another fireplace, more tall windows and a crystal chandelier.

The dining room connects to a bright kitchen outfitted with custom-made Officine Gullo components and a center island with a soapstone counter. A powder room is also in this part of the house.

The rear hall, accessible from the kitchen and the foyer, has a grand flying staircase that leads to the three bedrooms on the second floor.

The primary suite, to the right of the stair landing, has a fireplace and windows overlooking the grounds in the bedroom; the bathroom, which was once a guest room, has another fireplace, a shower with a glass door and a deep soaking tub. The other two bedrooms, across the hall, are each big enough to hold a queen-size bed and have en suite bathrooms.

The stairs continue to the top level, which holds a den, two more guest rooms and a full bathroom.

Another den and a pub with a built-in bar are on the lowest level of the house, where there was once a kitchen. A full bathroom, a laundry room and a mudroom are also on this level.

Outdoor space: The property includes several buildings, including a guest cottage with a kitchen, a classic red barn and a workshop that could be used as an art studio or events space. There is a pool within walking distance of the main house, along with a pool house in what was once the carriage house, with a bathroom and a laundry room. There is ample space for parking in the driveway, and plenty of room to add a garage.

This property, which includes a main house, a recently built guesthouse and a pool house, is about a mile from the Nantucket Historic District, putting it within an easy drive, bike ride or walk of the town’s shops and restaurants, as well as Children’s Beach, one of the island’s most loved waterfront spots. A Stop & Shop grocery store and Cisco Brewers, a popular distillery, are also nearby.

In the summer, high-speed ferries make the trip to Hyannis, on Cape Cod, in about an hour, while regular ferries take about two hours to reach the mainland.

Size: 4,045 square feet

Price per square foot: $2,471

Indoors: The main house is set back from the street, with the entrance at the end of a covered porch.

The front door opens into a foyer with hardwood floors and access to a powder room. Beyond is an open living area with a sleek gas fireplace framed by white shiplap; a dining area; and access to the side porch and a den used as a media room.

The adjacent kitchen has stainless steel appliances; a tiered island with space for several bar stools; a window over the sink looking out onto the swimming pool; and stairs to the lower level. A bedroom with an en suite bathroom that has a walk-in shower is off the kitchen.

The second level, reached from a staircase near the foyer, is configured as one large primary suite, with sloped ceilings, built-in cabinetry, a dressing area with several large closets, and a full bathroom.

Two more bedrooms and two full bathrooms are on the lowest level of the main house, along with a laundry room and a living room with French doors that open to a sunken brick patio.

Across the pool from the main house is a guesthouse with two bedrooms and two full bathrooms, along with a living room and a kitchen.

At one end of the pool is a pool house with a half bathroom, a kitchenette and an outdoor shower.
