“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) implored Republican senators during a closed-door meeting Thursday to embrace a border-security deal with Democrats, arguing this is the moment to actually get something done to address the crisis,” Punchbowl News reports.
“According to two attendees, McConnell also said there’s no chance they could get a border deal with Democrats under a second Donald Trump presidency. Of course, while Trump was in office, Congress failed several times to reach an agreement on border security and immigration, and the issue even caused a government shutdown.”
“It’s the latest effort by GOP leaders to assuage conservatives who have derided the ongoing bipartisan talks. Of course, McConnell also wants Congress to pass the broader supplemental funding package — which includes aid for Ukraine and Israel. Republicans have conditioned that measure on Democrats’ willingness to agree to border policy changes.”
