Veteran backup Martin Jones will get the start for the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night when they host the New York Rangers, according to Sportsnet’s Luke Fox.
Jones, 33, who signed in the off-season with Toronto for just $875,000 and has spent most of the season with the AHL Marlies, is 3-0-0 since being called up last week to back up the now injured Joseph Woll.
Defenceman T.J. Brodie, who missed last game with the flu, is also expected to play.
Jones made his Maple Leafs debut when Woll went down with an ankle injury on Dec. 7 in Ottawa, going on to make nine saves to earn the win. The native of North Vancouver, B.C., has made two starts in goal since, making 69 saves for wins against the Rangers and Penguins.
Ilya Samsonov, who was out with an illness when Jones was called up, continues to struggle with consistency this season, allowing six goals in his last start, a 6-5 loss to Columbus on Thursday.
In three games with Toronto, Jones is sporting a 1.86 goals-against average and .949 save percentage, which is far better than his career numbers of 2.70/.906. Jones first broke into the league with Los Angeles, but has played with San Jose, Philadelphia, and Seattle.
