Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the midst of his worst season as a starter in the NFL.
His interceptions are up, his passing yards per game are down and the Chiefs have lost three of their past four games.
What’s worse, Mahomes hasn’t been good in the area that he’s typically excelled: passing under pressure.
In 2022, Mahomes had a passer rating of 105.2 with a 41-12 passing touchdown-to-interception ratio, per StatMuse.
But in 2023, Mahomes has a 58.4 passing rating and a 4-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio, according to Next Gen Stats.

It’s never a good thing for a two-time MVP and two-time Super Bowl MVP to be compared to rookie quarterbacks like Bryce Young and Aidan O’Connell, and Mahomes’ inability to lift Kansas City out of its offensive slump doesn’t bode well for the team’s repeat chances.
But not all of this is on Mahomes, as Chiefs pass-catchers have the most dropped passes in the NFL this season with 34 despite throwing the fourth-most on-target passes this season.
The Chiefs as a team have averaged just 22.5 points per game – which is 11th in the NFL and the lowest in the Andy Reid era since 2014.
Mahomes and company will need to get it together in the final four games of the season as they plan their postseason journey.
The Denver Broncos’ loss to the Detroit Lions helps the Chiefs’ chances to retain the division, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have an easier path to defend their Super Bowl title in February.
Mahomes has solid matchups left on the docket, though: the New England Patriots, the Las Vegas Raiders, the Cincinnati Bengals, and Los Angeles Chargers.
