Ever since Ron Rivera took over the Washington Commanders, it’s been hard to know what to make of the team.
They’ve alternated years with great defenses with not-so-good ones, and while there have been some signs of improvement on offense, it’s evident that something needs to change.
Some people thought Rivera was going to be on the hot seat this season, and bringing in Eric Bieniemy as his assistant coach made some wonder if he was there to take over and replace him at some point in the campaign.
Fast forward to today, and Diana Russini of The Athletic reports that the Commanders will fire Rivera at the end of the season (via Dov Kleiman).

Per Russini, new team owner Josh Harris is going to fire Rivera and some members of the front office.
Apparently, he always intended to part ways with the former Carolina Panthers HC at the end of the season; he’s just not making an effort to hide it anymore.
“Since acquiring the team, new owner Josh Harris has had the vision to keep Rivera in place through the end of the season, then move on. It’s really not a secret anymore,” read the report.
Rivera was considered to be one of the best coaches in the game and a defensive guru, but he could never replicate his success from his Panthers days in Maryland.
The Commanders are going to have a ton of cap space and draft capital, and with new ownership looking to make a big splash and turn the team around right away, this is far from a surprise.
Expect the Commanders to be tied to almost every big name in both free agency and the coaching scene.
As for Rivera, he could still find another job as a DC.
