The San Francisco 49ers are now in the driver’s seat as far as being the favorites to win this year’s Super Bowl after they put on a masterclass against the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

The lead professor of that masterclass was quarterback Brock Purdy, who completed 19 of 27 pass attempts for 314 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions in what may have been the most impressive performance of his young career.

It catapulted him into the top spot of the MVP race, but he still has plenty of critics who feel he’s mostly the beneficiary of a great offensive mind in head coach Kyle Shanahan and some very talented teammates on offense.

Joy Taylor said on FS1’s “Speak” that she can’t get on the Purdy for MVP train because he hasn’t proven he’s the Niners’ most valuable player on offense, but Emmanuel Acho said if the Niners win their remaining games and Purdy plays great, Purdy could deserve the award.

A big part of Taylor’s argument is that during San Francisco’s three-game losing streak, left tackle Trent Williams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel were hobbled, and Purdy wasn’t able to overcome that.

Yet against the Cleveland Browns in the first game of that skid, Purdy led a last-minute drive to put the Niners in position to win before Jake Moody missed the potential game-winning field goal.

The following two weeks, Purdy had two interceptions apiece, but he also completed at least 70 percent of his pass attempts in both contests.

San Francisco hosts the Seattle Seahawks this weekend, and their only “difficult” game remaining will be on Christmas Day against the Baltimore Ravens, who are an outstanding defensive squad.

As Acho noted, if Purdy puts together five more good or great games, especially if he leads the Niners to a comeback win, the MVP could belong to him.
