The Cincinnati Bengals‘ season, for all intents and purposes, is over after star quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a wrist injury on November 16 in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

It was a continuation of bad fortune for the Bengals, who first had to deal with Burrow playing on a strained calf he sustained in training camp that was a factor in their 1-3 start.

Per Adam Schefter, Burrow had surgery to repair a torn ligament in that injured wrist, and according to the organization, the procedure “went as planned” and the QB is “expected to make a complete recovery.”

After playing very poorly in the first four games of 2023, Burrow started to regain his mojo as Cincinnati won four games in a row and was starting to look like the team it had been the last two years.

But now, it is “wait ’til next year” for an organization that has experienced nothing but disappointment over the years.

The Bengals reached the Super Bowl two seasons ago, only to narrowly lose to the Los Angeles Rams, and in the 1980s, they got to the big game twice and lost to Joe Montana’s San Francisco 49ers both times.

The franchise could be coming to a crossroads, as stud wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins are soon due for contract extensions, and after committing tons of money to Burrow’s extension, it may not be able to afford to keep both wideouts.

If that is the case, the Bengals may be hard-pressed to continue to contend for the world championship it has never won.
