The NHL is a league of eras, of generations making their mark.
For the game’s newest wave of talent, that mark’s been made with dizzying displays out on the sheet. With breakneck speed, limitless creativity, highlight reels that want for nothing.
But off the ice, the new generation’s made more waves, still. The sport long known for stoic conformity has begun embracing fashion, embracing some hint of individuality. New-era mainstays David Pastrnak and Patrik Laine have led the push to shed traditional black blazers in favour of wilder prints, of bigger swings. While the hockey world hasn’t leaned fully into the fashion game yet — despite the positive impact such a shift could have — it’s continued to grow, pulled forward by its youth movement.
That in mind, we’re launching a new monthly series for the 2023-24 season — NHL Fit Check — breaking down the game’s growing sense of style. But instead of just hearing our thoughts on the subject, we’re turning the mic over to the experts, bringing in a different professional stylist each month to rank the best looks from around the game.
To lead off our series, we turn to designer, stylist and creative consultant Erinnicole Goodwin. Since launching her brand It’s Goode Clothing and It’s Goode Consulting in 2017, Goodwin has crafted looks for some of the hoops world’s biggest names, from Steph Curry to Damian Lillard to Toronto Raptors alum DeMar DeRozan.
Taking stock of the past month of NHL fits, here’s how Goodwin’s top 10 broke down:
10. Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars
9. Patrik Laine, Columbus Blue Jackets
8. Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings
7. Mitch Marner, Toronto Maple Leafs
6. Phillip Danault, Los Angeles Kings
5. Jonas Siegenthaler, New Jersey Devils
4. Martin Necas, Carolina Hurricanes
3. Arber Xhekaj, Montreal Canadiens
2. Alexandre Carrier, Nashville Predators
1. Nikita Zadorov, Calgary Flames
