The Miami Dolphins had an opportunity to make a powerful statement as far as being a legitimate Super Bowl contender last Sunday when they visited the Philadelphia Eagles, but they lost, 31-17.

A number of pundits said afterward that it is proof the Dolphins are fake contenders, but it is also important to remember they were shorthanded for that contest.

Rookie sensation De’Von Achane, who had been one of the NFL’s most productive running backs, has been out for a couple of weeks with a knee injury, while Jalen Ramsey and Xavien Howard, their starting cornerbacks, also didn’t play.

Ramsey hasn’t suited up for Miami yet after they traded for him this offseason because of a meniscus injury he sustained during training camp, and he was expected to be out until December, but per Adam Schefter, he is expected to play on Sunday against the New England Patriots.

His return cannot come too soon, as Miami has had problems on the defensive side of the football for a while.

While they still have the league’s top scoring offense, they rank 21st in total yards allowed and 27th in points given up, and on Sunday, they allowed Philly wide receiver A.J. Brown to run amok.

Ramsey, who just turned 29 years of age, has been named to the Pro Bowl six times and the All-Pro First Team three times, including in both of the last two seasons, and he was a key reason the Los Angeles Rams won the Super Bowl two seasons ago.

The Dolphins have been in disarray as an organization ever since the legendary Dan Marino retired following the 1999 season — they have made the playoffs just three times in the last 20 years, and they haven’t been to the AFC Championship Game since the 1992 campaign.

They will need Ramsey to be healthy and to play well if they will have any real shot at their first world championship since the 1973 season.
