It wasn’t pretty, and it was definitely tougher than expected, but the Kansas City Chiefs still managed to get the job done vs. the Denver Broncos.
Divisional matchups are always tricky, and the Broncos had their backs against the wall, knowing that a loss could pretty much end their season.
Sean Payton’s team arrived in Arrowhead Stadium ready to play, and their defense had their best outing of the season, holding Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid’s offense to just 19 points.
That’s why it was key when the Chiefs’ defense rose to the occasion, holding the Broncos to just eight points and 197 total yards.
With that in mind, Mahomes raved about the defense’s sense of urgency, stating that the offense didn’t play to their level and that they needed to do better to honor the hard work they’re doing.
For the first time in the Reid-Mahomes era, the Chiefs have a top-five defense.
They rank second in points allowed per game and fifth in yards allowed per game, and props to DC Steve Spagnuolo for putting that unit together.
Superstar DT Chris Jones proved why the Chiefs were right to break the bank to pay him, logging his eighth straight game with at least one sack and wreaking havoc on the line of scrimmage.
Long behind are the days in which the offense has to bail the defense out.
And if the Chiefs manage to get their hands on another skilled receiver, it’s going to be over for the rest of the league.
