The Chicago Bears have regressed in a major way as they are now 0-4 after a self-inflicted loss against the Denver Broncos.

Justin Fields had his best game of the season so far as he threw for four touchdowns, finally breaking out of the slump he’s been in.

D.J. Moore and Cole Kmet both impressed as Fields’ receiving options, making the Bears offense look competent.

However, the defense let the team down again as they allowed Russell Wilson to lead a second-half comeback and give the Broncos their first win of the 2023 NFL season.

With the game tied 28-28 late in the fourth quarter, Chicago had an opportunity to take the lead as they were well within field goal range.

However, the Bears decided to go for it on fourth-and-1 and failed to convert though head coach Matt Eberflus later defended the decision via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk.

“We had a chance to seal the deal right there,” Eberflus said.

Eberflus called for a Khalil Herbert run, but Denver’s defense was ready and stopped the running back short of the sticks.

From there, Wilson got the Broncos into field-goal range and were able to walk off with the win.

Eberflus may have been correct to go for it in that situation given the state of the defense at that point, but grabbing the lead first would’ve been much smarter in hindsight.

It’s those kinds of decisions that could cost a head coach their job and Eberflus certainly must be feeling the heat.

Even though there are a few months left in the season, Chicago’s playoff hopes are already dead in the water.
