Blue Jays celebrate wild-card berth with champaign party: ‘We expected to be here’

The MLB regular-season is officially done, and the party was officially on for the post-season-bound Toronto Blue Jays.

At least for one day.

After clinching a wild-card berth on Saturday night thanks to the out-of-town scoreboard, the Blue Jays had to wait until Sunday to celebrate their post-season berth. So, after a 12-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, the cigars were lit and the champagne was popped.

In the alcohol-covered locker room, every player put on a shirt with “Take October” across the chest. Spirits were clearly high, but it was also clear they all know there is still work to be done.

“We expected to be here,” starting pitcher Chris Bassitt told a champagne-drenched Hazel Mae. “This is why I came here, to experience this.”

The Blue Jays will now take on the Minnesota Twins in the wild-card round, and Bo Bichette knows it’s time for this group to put together a post-season run.

It was an up-and-down year for the Blue Jays, who came into the season with sky-high expectations.

But in the end, they came together to earn a post-season berth, which Vladmir Guerrero Jr. largely credits to the team’s chemistry.
