The Columbus Blue Jackets have added some Hall of Fame experience to their coaching staff ahead of the upcoming season.
The club announced Monday that Mark Recchi has been hired as an assistant coach.
Recchi, 55, was a seven-time All-Star who had 577 goals and 1,533 points in 1,652 games with the Penguins, Flyers, Canadiens, Hurricanes, Atlanta Thrashers, Lightning and Bruins. He retired after winning the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011 and has worked in various coaching roles with the Stars, Penguins and Devils since, including as an assistant coach in both Pittsburgh and New Jersey. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017.
“Mark Recchi has been part of the National Hockey League for over three decades and brings an incredible amount of experience to our staff,” said head coach Pascal Vincent in a team statement. “He is a Hall of Fame player who won three Stanley Cup championships, which, combined with his coaching experience, will make him a great resource for our players. We are excited to have him in Columbus.”
Recchi fills an opening created when Vincent was elevated to the head coaching job last week while replacing Mike Babcock, who agreed to resign after an investigation by the NHLPA due to concerns about Babcock’s conduct were raised by some Blue Jackets players.
