Fernandez, ranked 74th in the world, hadn’t won three main-draw matches at any tour-level event this year before this week in Mexico at the WTA Tour 1000 event.
The win also came against an in-form player as the 49th-ranked Navarro reached the semifinals in San Diego last week as a qualifier.
Navarro won the 2021 NCAA women’s singles title.
It was a rematch of the 2019 French Open junior final, won by Fernandez.
Fernandez, from Laval, Que., will next face American Sofia Kenin in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Fernandez, a finalist at the 2021 U.S. Open, is projected to rise at least 17 spots in the rankings based on this week’s performance.
