From 2016 to 2022, Willson Contreras and Adam Wainwright were on different ends of an intense rivalry: the former was the star catcher of the Chicago Cubs and the latter was one of the St. Louis Cardinals‘ frontline pitchers.
They had their fair share of battles over the years.
Since the start of the 2023, with Contreras joining the Cardinals, he got to know Wainwright.
He already knew Wainwright the pitcher and had a lot of respect for him.
Now, he got close to Wainwright the person and got really happy about the pitcher finally reaching 200 career wins after more than a few tries.
He was so emotional that he had to fight back tears when discussing Wainwright’s achievement.
“Willson Contreras, wiping away tears after Adam Wainwright’s 200th career win: ‘I’m proud of him because I know he’s doing his best, and that shows me how much he loves this team and how much he loves this city,’” Bally Sports Midwest tweeted, with Contreras’ quotes.

Things haven’t been easy for Wainwright, who has a 7.40 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP for the season.
But there he is, back on the mound every five days, trying to do his thing and giving his best.
Wainwright has been so good in his MLB tenure that even after a disastrous 2023, he has a 3.53 career ERA.
He has had quite a career, and he is a favorite among Cardinals fans.
He is on his own farewell tour, enjoying his last few days as a major leaguer knowing that he gave everything he had.
