There are many ways to compete at the highest level in the National Football League.

Some choose to build through the draft; others look to spend big bucks or trade away their draft assets to get stars and compete right away.

And there’s the third group of teams that stay pretty much in the middle, which is probably the worst position you could be in.

That’s the case with the New England Patriots right now, which is why it’s not a surprise to see that they’re not good enough to be a Super Bowl contender, nor bad enough to get a top-5 player in the draft.

Even so, HC Bill Belichick would rather be where he is right now, as he recently told WEEI that teams that overspend simply cannot maintain their level of success (via JPA Football).

Belichick pointed out teams like the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have to settle for lesser teams after spending big bucks because they cannot afford that payroll for long.

That’s a valid point, and Belichick did win six Super Bowl rings with that mentality.

But it’s also worth noting that he had Tom Brady taking pay cuts for the best part of his career, so context matters here.

Also, most teams and fans would gladly take that Super Bowl ring even if that means struggling for two or three seasons before being able to compete at the highest level again.
