Toronto Blue Jays star shortstop Bo Bichette is out of the starting lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Washington Nationals.
Bichette left Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Guardians with tightness in his right quadriceps muscle, but manager John Schneider said the move was precautionary.

The two-time all-star Bichette is considered day-to-day and will be getting an MRI on his right quad, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported.
Bichette leads the Blue Jays with a .314 batting average and 152 hits. He’s also second on the club with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs.

Ernie Clement will start at shortstop in Bichette’s place. Clement was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday after third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right middle finger sprain.
Replacing Chapman at third base will be rookie Davis Schneider, making his first MLB start at the hot corner. Schneider, who will also be hitting cleanup, has homered in each of his last three MLB games, providing a necessary spark to an offence that has performed below expectations this season.

Also of note, Danny Jansen will catch Kevin Gausman Monday. As Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith recently pointed out, Gausman has 98 strikeouts, 13 walks and a 2.96 ERA with Jansen catching him but a 3.76 ERA with 72 strikeouts and 21 walks with Alejandro Kirk behind the plate (each catching 11 games entering Monday).
