The expectations for San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama are sky-high and some people are afraid he won’t live up to them.
Former NBA star Kenyon Martin believes that Wembanyama needs to silence the expectations of others and only try to live up to his own goals.
Speaking with Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Martin also said that he thinks Wembanyama is in the right place.
“Him being in San Antonio I think is the perfect place for him,” he said.
There are many people who believe that Wembanyama was selected by the perfect team for him.
The Spurs have long been known as a team that can foster young talented players and turn them into legitimate superstars.
That is partly due to the wonderful, historic talent of head coach Gregg Popovich.
Popovich is one of the smartest minds to ever lead a team and has helped craft the careers of multiple young players.
As for the expectations, Martin is adamant that Wembanyama only focuses on what he wants to achieve.
He will surely hear the cheers and jeers from fans all over the league during his first season.
If he pays too much attention to all of that, he will lose sight of his ultimate goal: being the best basketball player he can be.
It has been a long time since any rookie has experienced the hype that Wembanyama has.
But he is playing for an established franchise with a one-of-a-kind coach.
If he can keep his own expectations in check, he might have a phenomenal rookie year.
