Blue Jays’ Kiermaier, Chapman, Richards return for series opener vs. Reds

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier and reliever Trevor Richards have been reinstated from the injured list and will be active for Friday’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds.

Also, third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) returns to the lineup after missing the past three games.

Outfielder Nathan Lukes and reliever Jay Jackson have been optioned to triple-A Buffalo to make room on the roster.

Kiermaier was on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow laceration, while Richards was on the 15-day IL with neck inflammation.

The return of two regulars and a key reliever should help a short-handed Blue Jays team that has gone 4-5 in its past nine games.

Star shortstop Bo Bichette is expected to rejoin the Blue Jays and work out on Friday after playing two rehab games with Buffalo, but will not be active for the game against the Reds. The hope is he’s activated Saturday

Bichette has been out with right patellar tendinitis since the beginning of the month.
