In the NBA, contracts are rarely signed in August, which is usually a very slow period around the league.

But on Tuesday, word came out that guard Josh Hart is finalizing a four-year contract extension with the New York Knicks that could be worth $81 million.

Hart is on the Team USA roster for the upcoming FIBA World Cup, and during a practice, he was able to hit some off-balance left-handed shots, which led Tyrese Haliburton to troll him on Twitter.

Hart entered the NBA for the 2017-18 season as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, and he quickly emerged into a valuable complementary player.

He may not be a great 3-point shooter, but he has the tendency to hit timely 3-pointers, and although he’s just 6-foot-4, he’s a very good rebounder that grabbed 7.8 boards a game this past season.

Hart was a key part of a Knicks team that surpassed virtually all expectations and got to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.

That team remains largely intact, and it will look to build on what it did when it finished with the fifth-best record in the Eastern Conference last season.

Team USA began its exhibition schedule on Monday with an easy blowout win over Puerto Rico, and it will begin the FIBA World Cup later this month looking to capture the gold medal.

In 2019, it finished seventh in the FIBA World Cup, which was considered a disaster, and it therefore has lots to prove this time around.
