The reigning Premier League champions Manchester City have made a few transfers this summer as they seek to bolster their squad. Their first signing was Mateo Kovacic who they signed from Chelsea for a transfer fee of £25 million ($32m).
After acquiring Mateo Kovacic they have now signed highly-rated Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.
The Citizens are believed to have paid a whooping €90m (£77.9m) to sign Gvardiol which makes him the second most expensive defender of all time after £80m man Harry Maguire. The 21-year-old has inked a 5-year contract which will keep him at the club till 2028.
Gvardiol expressed his excitement over the move in a recent interview via Mancity.com
“I have always dreamed of one day playing in England and to be doing so now with Manchester City – after the season they have just had – is a real honour for me,”
“Anyone who saw Manchester City play last season knows they are the best team in the world. To win the Treble says everything you need to know about the quality this team has”
“To be joining City is something very special for me and my family. To have the chance to work with Pep Guardiola, too, will be amazing. I know I am not yet the finished article and I am sure my game will progress under the best coach in football”
Josko Gvardiol comes across as a strong and well-positioned centre-back who has the ability to thwart any attacking threat posed by the opposition. The centre-back’s ability to read the game well coupled with great control over the ball makes him an important defensive asset.
The highly-rated defender has made over 59 appearances for RB Leipzig where he has found the back of the net 3 times. The defender has established his presence in the senior Croatian team and has made over 21 appearances for them.
Manchester City would be thrilled to acquire his services as they have now got another highly-rated defender amongst their rank. After a dazzling season, the Premier League giants would look to retain their Premier League title as well as dominate proceedings in the Champions League as well.
City will take on Burnley for their first Premier League clash on the 12th of August after which they will lock horns with Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup final which is to take place on the 17th of August.
This transfer window has been a busy one as top stars have moved base in a quest to take on a new challenge or to try out something new. This has been a great opportunity for many clubs to bring in some of the world’s best players. Clubs have also been able to offload some of their players who were not living up to expectations.
