Blue Jays’ Hyun Jin Ryu not expected to start vs. Angels ahead of trade deadline

[ad_1]

Left-handed starter Hyun Jin Ryu is unlikely to return to the Toronto Blue Jays rotation this weekend against the Los Angeles Angels, manager John Schneider said Monday.

Instead, Schneider said Ryu could pitch a sim game as he inches closer to a return from Tommy John surgery.

The 36-year-old had surgery last June but has made four rehab starts this month. Last Friday, he pitched 6.0 innings of two-run work and reached 85 pitches — 58 of them strikes. He only allowed three total hits and added five strikeouts and one walk to his line in the game.

Ryu’s 30-day rehab assignment ends on Aug. 3, at which point he will enter a rotation that has a near-perfect bill of health this season. Following an off-day on Thursday, the Angels series marks the beginning of a stretch of 17 games in 17 days for the Blue Jays and Ryu is expected to return to the rotation at some point during that time.
