Unilever, General Mills lead way in big data hiring

Each week, Just Food’s journalists explore movements in job postings that shed light on hiring trends in our sector. These job signals provide insights into where the leading companies are focusing their recruitment efforts and why.

We reveal the skills that are in high demand in the sector, and the themes driving current hiring patterns. This new, thematic jobs coverage is powered by our underlying Disruptor data, which tracks all major deals, patents, company filings, hiring patterns and social media buzz across our sectors.

Unilever, Rich Products and General Mills were among the consumer-facing companies most active in the recruitment of jobs linked to big data in the second quarter of the year, data shows.

Between the three companies, they had 911 jobs related to big data open for application in the period from 1 April to 30 June.

They were among the top ten consumer companies for active big data jobs in the quarter, among the groups monitored by GlobalData, Just Food’s parent. Active jobs denote roles open for application.

GlobalData’s Job Analytics database tracks daily job postings across multiple industries, including consumer goods. As part of the research and intelligence company’s analysis, it groups jobs by theme, providing an indication of where businesses are focusing their hiring efforts.

Big data in combination with artificial intelligence has the power to revolutionise companies by extracting insights from large datasets and improving decision-making. Big data analysis can be used across all business areas, from inventory and supply chain management through to product development and customer service.

Unilever, a consistently strong hirer in the big data theme, said last year it leverages data-driven technology to “optimise [their] on-shelf presence” by delisting low-performing products and developing new products in response to changing consumer behaviours.

Among some of its recent big data-related job listings in Q2, Unilever has advertised for roles within digital marketing, data analysis, data management, sales and distribution analysis, logistics planning, and R&D.

Big data remains one of the most important themes within the consumer goods industry, as measured by hiring volumes. Hirings within this theme have remained stable between January and June, with a biannual low of 8,034 active jobs identified by GlobalData in April 2023 and a biannual high of 8,940 active jobs in June 2023.
