The running back position in the NFL is becoming more and more devalued every single year, with teams being less and less willing to commit to star players at the position on a long-term basis.
Last week, three of the NFL’s elite backs were eligible to enter contract talks with their respective teams in an attempt to get a long-term deal done before the deadline for franchise-tagged players.
Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and Tony Pollard fell short of securing long-term deals with their teams, which was a surprising development as it seemed at least two of the three would get a contract extension.
Now running backs around the league are starting to get really concerned about the direction this is heading, as many believe star backs might not ever get paid the same again and might have to play on one-year deals unless they’re on a rookie contract.
Cleveland Browns star Nick Chubb is the latest to publicly say he doesn’t believe it’s fair how running backs in the league are being treated right now via Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram.

Over the weekend, a large group of the best running backs in the NFL got together on a Zoom call organized by Austin Ekeler of the Los Angeles Chargers to talk about the current state of the league when it comes to their position.
All of these top-tier backs, especially Ekeler, have expressed great concern over how things are going and want some drastic changes to take place to take care of running backs moving forward.
